However, as AI continues to influence healthcare, it raises concerns about fairness, equity, and the potential for bias in AI systems.

In countries like Switzerland, where financial pressures on healthcare systems are mounting, AI offers a promising solution to reduce costs by expediting diagnosis, screening, reporting, and decision-making. By integrating AI with human expertise, hospitals can better allocate resources and address financial constraints. However, for AI to be truly effective and inclusive, its deployment in clinical settings must be managed carefully to ensure it is free of bias.

Why AI Bias Happens

Bias in AI can emerge at various stages of its development, including data collection, algorithm design, and even the choices made by developers. The most prevalent source of bias is in the training data. If the data used to train AI systems does not represent all patient demographics or includes past societal biases, the AI model is likely to perpetuate these issues.
