Women in Tech: Getrude Elion, biochemist pharmacologist

Early History

Elion was born in the city of New York, where he grew up. This aspired to work in the scientific field. However, during the Great Depression, she had difficulty finding work in the sciences. In high school, He is working on cancer research projects. In addition to being a high school teacher. She spent several years as a lab consultant, food analyst, and food scientist. They worked during the day and studied at night to earn her Master’s degree. New York University awarded her a Master of Science in chemistry in 1941.

At the Wellcome Research Laboratories in Tuckahoe, New York. Elion worked as a scientist in the biochemistry department during World War II. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was award to her and her colleague, George Herbert Hitchings, in 1988. There were previously untreatable illnesses which they discovered and developed cures for. Leukemia and herpes were two of those diseases. She has risen to the position of a senior research chemist in the department and moved up. The ranks to become the department’s director of experimental therapies.

Her Incredible Achievements

During World War II, she worked as George Hitchings’ assistant. That’s when she got the chance to branch out into biochemistry as well as other medically-related fields thanks. To her work with Hitchings. Throughout her life, she pushes the hurdles of what was know and what wasn’t.

She focuses primarily on purines during her research. And her findings led her in the right direction allowing. Everything to fall into place. She was able to use this information to develop drugs that were clearly beneficial to patients and met real medical needs. She was a member of the American Association for Cancer. Research’s board of directors and president (1983-1984) from 1983 to 1984.

She was unable to complete her doctorate, but that never deterred her. Instead, she took it in stride and received three honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan. And Brown University, and the George Washington University.

The Garvan-Olin Medal. The National Medal of Science, and the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award were among. The honors, she receives during her lifetime for her significant contributions. To add to her already impressive list of accomplishments. She was the first woman to be awarded induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
