Meta Platforms has launched its new “Hyperscape” feature, which allows users to utilize the cameras on their Quest 3 or Quest 3S headsets to scan their real-world living rooms and transform them into photorealistic, shareable Virtual Reality (VR) environments. This innovative technology creates highly accurate digital replicas of physical spaces, capturing everything from furniture textures to lighting conditions. The feature is rolling out gradually on Meta Horizon OS v81, turning what was initially a solo, high-tech demo into a true shared social platform.
The key update is the addition of multiplayer support, allowing up to eight people to join the same instance of the digital replica. Users can generate shareable invite links, and friends can access the virtual hangouts using either a Quest 3/3S headset or the Meta Horizon mobile app on iOS or Android. This cross-platform accessibility is designed to lower the barrier to entry and encourage adoption across a wider user base. The process involves a quick room scan followed by cloud-based processing that can take up to several hours, delivering high-fidelity visuals. This development marks a crucial step in the evolution of the metaverse, moving the focus from purely fantastical virtual worlds toward replicating and integrating real physical spaces into the digital realm. This ability to share and interact within a photorealistic “digital twin” of a familiar setting represents a shift toward a hybrid real-and-virtual experience that Meta is betting will be key to making social VR appeal beyond the core gaming demographic.
