A €1.5B Deal in Limbo
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been exploring secure satellite communication solutions for government, diplomatic, and defense operations in high-risk areas, with Starlink being a leading contender. Reports suggest that Rome was considering a five-year deal worth €1.5 billion ($1.62 billion) with Starlink, which is operated under Musk’s SpaceX.
However, talks have reached an impasse. According to Crosetto, the discussions shifted from technical evaluations to political debates surrounding Musk himself, slowing progress.
Political Controversy and Security Concerns
The proposed deal has sparked criticism among opposition politicians, who question whether a crucial national security contract should be awarded to a foreign businessman closely linked to former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Meloni’s government has placed a strong emphasis on strengthening ties with the United States, but Trump’s stance on European allies has created challenges. Meloni is now navigating a delicate political situation, balancing U.S. relations while addressing concerns from European partners.
At the same time, her coalition partner, the far-right League party, supports Musk and Trump. The League’s leader, Matteo Salvini, recently held a phone call with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, where he praised American advancements in satellite technology.
What’s Next?
Defense Minister Crosetto stated that once political tensions subside, negotiations could return to a technical level, ensuring that Italy secures the most effective and safest communication system for national security needs.
