How Artificial Intelligence in Everyday Life for Young People in Switzerland

Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly become an integral part of young people’s lives in Switzerland. A recent study by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), commissioned by Swisscom, reveals that 71% of young people have interacted with AI tools like ChatGPT, with 34% using such applications weekly. This highlights the incredible pace at which AI has embedded itself into daily routines, outpacing previous technological adoptions.

Since AI became widely known in late 2022, tools like ChatGPT have gained traction due to their intuitive, dialogue-based interfaces, which make them highly accessible. Despite their ease of use, these tools aren’t without flaws—they sometimes produce inaccurate or misleading information. Nevertheless, their rapid integration reflects their utility and growing influence.

AI in the Context of Broader Media Use

In addition to AI, social networks and messaging platforms like Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and Snapchat remain staples of young people’s digital lives. Regardless of age, gender, or social background, these platforms are integral to daily communication and entertainment. However, the study notes that media consumption among youth is reaching saturation, with little room for further increases.

Ownership of personal devices such as smartphones, laptops, and portable speakers is nearly universal among young people, with device popularity increasing with age. The study also highlights a link between a family’s socioeconomic status and the quantity and variety of devices available to their children.

Insights from the James Study

The James Study (Youth, Activities, Media Survey Switzerland), conducted biennially since 2010, provides valuable insights into the media habits of Swiss youth aged 12 to 19 across the country’s major language regions. This long-running survey captures how young people balance leisure and media in an increasingly digital world.

AI’s rapid adoption is a testament to its relevance in modern life. While it is reshaping how young people interact with technology, it also raises questions about accuracy and reliability—highlighting the need for media literacy in navigating this evolving landscape.
