McDonald’s AI Hiring Bot Leak: 64 Million Applicant Records Exposed in Major Security Flaw
Millions of job seekers’ personal data have been compromised, and it all began with a chatbot named Olivia.
Security researchers Ian Carroll and Sam Curry discovered severe vulnerabilities in the McHire.com platform — a system McDonald’s uses to process job applications through an AI-driven chatbot. The breach, which exposed over 64 million records, included applicant names, email addresses, and phone numbers. The implications are profound for data privacy, cybersecurity, and the future of AI in recruitment.
The Chatbot with a Gaping Security Hole
The AI bot “Olivia”, developed by Paradox.ai, interacts with candidates to collect their resumes, contact information, and guide them through personality tests. But behind the sleek interface was an insecure backend riddled with basic vulnerabilities.

Researchers found that the admin interface used the default password “123456” — a stunning oversight in any cybersecurity environment, let alone one managing sensitive user data. Even worse, the platform’s API suffered from an IDOR vulnerability (Insecure Direct Object Reference), which allowed anyone with minimal technical knowledge to alter user IDs and access chat records and personal details across the system.
Carroll summarized the breach in chilling terms: “I started looking for a job, and 30 minutes later, we had access to practically every job application McDonald’s received in recent years.”
McDonald’s and Paradox Respond
Paradox.ai confirmed the issue and stated that only the ethical researchers accessed the system. The company has since launched a bug bounty program to encourage vulnerability reporting and tightened access protocols.

McDonald’s, distancing itself from the direct fault, acknowledged the failure was due to its third-party provider: “We are disappointed by this unacceptable vulnerability from Paradox.ai. Once we were informed, the issue was resolved the same day.”
Growing Scrutiny on AI in Recruitment
This incident reignites debate around AI in hiring, especially as companies increasingly lean on chatbots and algorithmic screening tools. According to recent surveys, 76% of companies now use personality and cognitive assessments to filter applicants — largely in response to candidates leveraging AI tools like ChatGPT to enhance resumes.
However, research from Erasmus University Rotterdam highlights a critical issue: candidates alter their behavior when they know AI is evaluating them. They tend to overemphasize analytical traits and suppress emotional expression, which can lead to bias and misjudged hiring outcomes.
