🇳🇬 Nigeria Launches “FemTech Frontier Labs” to Empower 200 Women Innovators

The Nigerian Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy has announced the formation of FemTech Frontier Labs, a significant new national program dedicated to fostering innovation among women. The initiative aims to support 200 women innovators who are developing advanced solutions utilizing AI, biotech, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies within the crucial sectors of healthcare and agriculture. The comprehensive program is structured to provide substantial resources, including essential prototype grants, complimentary cloud credits, specialized business mentoring, and valuable field-testing partnerships with major hospitals and established agricultural cooperatives across the nation.

Nigeria is strategically targeting this program to drastically improve female representation in the country’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce, where women currently occupy less than 22% of technical roles. By channeling support through this focused accelerator, the government seeks to leverage the rising number of innovation hubs in major cities like Lagos and Abuja to create a robust pipeline of women founders. These female-led startups are being encouraged to develop Africa-first solutions that directly address pressing local challenges. These critical areas include improving maternal health outcomes, developing effective remote diagnostics, and implementing advanced crop disease detection systems in agriculture. The FemTech Frontier Labs initiative is poised to empower women to lead the next wave of technological innovation and address fundamental societal needs across the continent.
