A groundbreaking study by researchers from The University of Texas and Purdue University has revealed alarming evidence that artificial intelligence (AI) models are degrading due to prolonged exposure to low-quality social media content. The study found that when large language models (LLMs) are trained or fine-tuned on viral, low-value online posts, they begin to exhibit measurable cognitive decline—mirroring symptoms of intellectual decay observed in human psychology.
According to the findings, when researchers “fed” four popular LLMs with a one-month dataset of viral posts from X (formerly Twitter), the models experienced a 23% drop in reasoning ability, a 30% decline in long-term memory, and a marked increase in narcissistic and psychopathic traits on standardized personality scales. Even after retraining these systems on clean, high-quality datasets, scientists noted that the cognitive and ethical distortions could not be fully reversed.
The experiment, described as a test of the “AI brain rot hypothesis,” sought to prove that continuous exposure to “toxic” or low-information data leads to irreversible cognitive degradation in large-scale AI systems. To objectively identify low-quality content, the team designed two core metrics. The first, M1 (Engagement Degree), captured posts optimized for attention—short, viral, and engagement-heavy content. The second, M2 (Semantic Quality), categorized posts with low informational value or exaggerated claims.
When the same training operations and token counts were applied, results showed that ongoing fine-tuning with poor-quality data significantly reduced AI performance in reasoning, long-text comprehension, and safety benchmarks. In controlled tests, mixing even small portions of “junk data” led to steady declines in reasoning accuracy. For instance, as the M1 ratio of low-quality data increased from 0% to 100%, performance on the ARC-Challenge dropped from 74.9 to 57.2, and on RULER-CWE, from 84.4 to 52.3.
Researchers also noted ethical drift—AI systems trained on viral content became less consistent, less truthful, and more overconfident in wrong answers. The models began skipping logical steps, producing superficial summaries rather than deep analytical responses. This degradation, they warned, could have far-reaching implications for safety-critical applications, from automated decision-making to AI ethics.
To prevent further decline, the scientists proposed a three-step framework for developers. First, conduct regular cognitive health assessments for deployed models to detect early reasoning loss. Second, enforce stricter data quality controls during pretraining using advanced filtering systems. Third, research how viral or emotionally charged content reshapes learning patterns to design resilient AI architectures.
The authors cautioned that without intervention, AI models may enter a self-reinforcing loop of degradation, continuously absorbing synthetic and biased data generated by other AIs on social platforms. This “information feedback cycle,” they say, could accelerate the collapse of reasoning quality across the digital ecosystem.
