OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Search, a new web search feature on its ChatGPT platform that promises to deliver fast, accurate answers to user queries.
The tool, an enhanced version of the SearchGPT prototype launched earlier this year, is powered by an optimized GPT-4o model, allowing ChatGPT to provide information and images from the web, including sports scores, news updates, stock prices, and more.
ChatGPT Search gathers information from a range of online sources, with links to these sources and attribution shown both in-line and in a sidebar.
The feature can be activated automatically based on the nature of the user’s query, or manually via a new web search icon within ChatGPT.
For instance, if a user searches for upcoming events in a specific city, ChatGPT Search will pull from local news sources, while further questions about dining recommendations will display a list of popular restaurants in the area.
For accuracy on time-sensitive topics, such as election results, OpenAI confirms that ChatGPT Search will refer to trusted news sources, including the Associated Press and Reuters.
ChatGPT Search is currently rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers on both mobile and desktop versions, with plans to expand access to enterprise and educational clients in the coming weeks. Access for free users will follow later.
