McDonald’s joins the metaverse club

Intro

McDonald’s claims they will be able to deliver food in person and online with a little help from the metaverse.

The company filed 10 applications with the US Patent. And Trademark Office earlier this month for the McDonald’s brand and McCafe.

The trademarks show they are for “virtual food and beverage products”.

Another describes it as “operating a virtual restaurant online featuring home delivery”.

One of McDonald’s trademarks was for “downloadable multimedia files containing artwork, text, audio and video files and non-fungible tokens.”

Another described its purpose as “operating a virtual restaurant featuring actual. And virtual goods” and “operating a virtual restaurant online featuring home delivery.”

The Tweet

“You are hanging out in the metaverse and get hungry. Don’t have to put down your headset. You walk into a McDonald’s and place an order. It arrives at your door a little while later,” trademark lawyer Josh Gerben, tweeted together with descriptions of the trademarks.

Elizabeth Campbell – McDonald’s Senior Director of Cultural Engagement – opined that this was the right time for her company to enter the Metaverse since the Year of the Tiger is a representation of “bravery, strength, and confidence.”

“We’re honored to celebrate this Lunar New Year through his art expressions and hope our fans will enjoy this very cool and celebratory experience with us.” – she added.

Subsequently, the fast-food chain and Leon will produce a TV spot that features the designer’s reflections on beloved traditions celebrated during the Lunar New Year.

At the moment, we have no idea how the entire physical delivery feature will work. But from what we can understand is if someone orders food in metaverse, McDonald’s will actually deliver the food at their doorstep in the real world, just like it happens with the app.

McDonald’s isn’t the only restaurant chain capitalizing on the craze. On February 3, Panera Bread filed a trademark application for “Paneraverse”. The trademark listed intended usages including “food items and beverages for use in virtual worlds” and “non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for facilitating commercial transactions.”
